As I develop more and more my teaching skills and creativity when interacting with my students in the classroom, I learn how to integrate poetry and chanting within the content area units! I often use poetry and chanting in math, science and social studies as part of the GLAD (Guided Language Acquisition Design) units and my 4th grade students love them! It is always a good time when we chant and read or create content related poems.
Likewise, I also love giving my students the opportunity to interact with poetry just for the sake of exploring and creating poems that play with words, rhymes and meanings. One of my favorite books is "Where the Sidewalk Ends" by Silverstein. He uses everyday language to create fun and entertaining poems! I read one or two poems to my students weekly and they absolutely can't wait for the next ones! It's been more than a month we don't do that because we have been reading social studies related books, but we'll start doing that again after spring break! It literally takes me 2 or 3 minutes reading them aloud and showing the kids the hilarious illustrations! It is a great way to reinforce how to write questions, add humor and voice to their writing and stimulate their creativity! Here are some fun ones I found on Google images!

Also, I just found this idea on Pinterest that uses the book "The best part of me" by Wendy Ewald. I can't wait to try that with my students! Students write poems about their bodies and the teacher publishes them on the classroom wall with a real picture of their students! There are some sample pages on Amazon if you click on the book! The idea is fabulous!
