Scrapbook Club-
integrating Literacy and Crafts
The
first Pasco School District Scrapbook
Club started
in September, 2010 and it became more than just a way to involve students after
school! It became a great opportunity for parents to get involved and help
students succeed in school. Initially, fifteen girls and two parents were part
of the club and our meetings on Wednesdays were a lot of fun! Members kept their
grades up (only A`s and B`s) meeting the club`s requirement.
During
our second year, members decided to select a president and a vice-president to
run our club! Seventh graders Jazmin and Deisy Cardoso have been doing a great
job by organizing and planning our activities weekly. The minimum requirement
switched to 3.2 GPA, making sure that students do their late work or homework
first and see the club as a priviledge and as an incentive to keep being a
responsible learner.
All our materials are either donated or fundraised by the club and members have been good about running the club. Mrs. Potter (our Bus Department Director), Dr. Johnson (Professor at WSU Tri cities and my husband) and Mrs. Butcher (Whittier Elementary librarian)have been supporting our club by participating and contributing with ideas, donations and most important: their time! Three different parents have been involved with our club this year so far and one of our next directed activities on literacy will be journaling on their album pages. That way, arts and language arts are connected, giving members the opportunity to master their writing skills, as well as developing thinking skills.
